Ten years ago, you could’ve been forgiven for expecting a satire of silicon valley fantasies when you clicked on that header. But it’s 2017 and things have changed. We no longer balk at the idea of fighting death, or dismiss it as an esoteric pursuit. Nearly 66 years after the Welsh bard Dylan Thomas famously implored: ‘Do not go gentle into that good night’, scientists are finally saying, ‘do not go at all!’. But there’s only so much that hope and promise of future can do, and many still take science’s grand plans for human immortality with a pinch of salt. While it may be true that scientific efforts towards defeating death or even delaying it are yet to come anywhere close to fruition, there has never before been more promise in ageing research than now. Telomere Biology is the most promising field of all.
